Secret Flute / Flötenton

Secret Flute

The cups stand empty, steady, calm.
The candle glows: a secret flute.
The rose releases dazzling balm.
The things are silent: but not mute.

Flötenton

Die Tassen stehen leer und ganz gelassen.
Die Kerzenflamme ist ein Flötenton.
Die Rose schüttet Süße aus in Massen.
Die Dinge schweigen; doch sie sind nicht stumm.

The usefulness of a pot lies in its emptiness.

Pulling the Curtain Aside

Painting in blocks of strong colours: yellow and blue cityscape with red sun and red person on roof.

In my very vivid, restless, repetitive dreams in my sleep, I often feel like a spectator who gets periodically drawn into the action and cannot escape. I added this experience to the one of feeling like an actor or character on stage rather than a person who decides upon her actions and communications.

Who Watches the Dusk?

Who Watches the Dusk?

Who watches the tendrils grow and uncurl?
Who watches the rose-buds glow and unfurl?
Who watches the robin flash in the drizzle?
Who watches the robin splash in the puddle?
Flap – and hop – and look – and be gone?

Who watches the drizzle slowly subside?
Who watches the clouds be blown and turn bright?
Who watches the rainbow glimmer and blink?
Who watches the rainbow shimmer and shrink?
Flash – and stretch – and fade – and be gone?

           Who watches the dusk?
           Who talks to the birds?
           Who gropes for the spring?
           Who smells the wet earth?

                     Who frees up the time?
                     Who fills out the space?
                     Who walks with the wind?
                     Who offers his face?

           Who watches the dusk?
Who talks to the birds?
           Who gropes for the spring?
           Who smells the wet earth?

                     Who frees up the time?
                     Who fills out the space?
                     Who walks with the wind?
                     Who offers her face?

Im Überfluß

Im Überfluß

Im Überfluß,
im Hochgenuß,
im Zuckerguß,

zwischen kunterbunten Ledertaschen,
weltweit angesagten Modemaschen,
wonnespendenden Champagnerflaschen,
zwischen Tischen voller toller Sachen —

bleibt der Mensch doch
arm.

arm. Und müde.
Und verfroren…

Mandelmond

Mandelmond

Im kühlen Blaßblau wölbt sich
ein großer halber Mond:
Was ausblieb, das erfüllt sich.
Es hat sich doch gelohnt,

zu warten bis zum Abend
aufs goldne Wolkenschiff,
nach jenem Stern zu fragen,
den dir das Schicksal schliff.

Du streiftest über Fluchten,
nach Gipfeln griffst du aus
und stiegst durch Wald und Schluchten,
als reistest du nach Haus.

Der Stern taucht aus der Leere.
Es hat sich doch gelohnt
für jene Wolkenfähre
und jenen Mandelmond.

O Land of Ice and Fire

In the Cool of the Evening

In the Cool of the Evening

In the cool of the evening, silver-lit,
when the tide of noise has receded at last,
God walks along the coal-black beach
to listen out for the whispering waves,
to listen out for prayers and sighs,
to look for golden gems in the sand,
to look for purity in the hearts.

Necklace of matt black and translucent green beads.

These lines were inspired by the pristine deep-black beaches of Lanzarote, where you can find lava and, in some rare places, tiny shards of olivine.

The strange idea that God walks on earth in the evening to observe humans stems from the story of Adam and Eve, when they are still in paradise but have lost their purity of heart (Genesis 3,8).

Vigil (Du bist die Hand / Your Distant Hand)

Vigil (V)

Vigil (V)

At dawn, the noisy and unruly world,
just like a tired child, has not yet stirred.
We are the voice of all its dreams: we stand,
my hymnal lifted by your distant hand.
We are the psalm arising from the earth
while night wind is still bending blooming herbs.
We are the chant across the ripening land…
My hymnal lifted by your distant hand.

These lines describe the early-morning prayer of Christian monks and nuns: standing up and bowing, chanting and responding to each other… They also imagine an invisible connection between two of them — good friends perhaps, close relatives, or former lovers — who feel that they are praying together across the distance between them.
