Sonnwendfeuer
Aus Scheiterhaufen, ungeheuer,
glimmt an den Säumen lautlos Feuer:
Die finstern Wolken sind durchlichtet,
als Sonnwendfeuer aufgeschichtet!
Ein Rosenhag, verhundertfacht
an Anmut und an Farbenpracht…
Und dann erstrahlt am Horizont
ein feingeschliffner neuer Mond.

Brief Encounter (II/III)
Brief Encounter (II/III)
Out of the sea,
out of thick mist, a reddish
disc rose: the sun on a wilful day.
It was around solstice, but it would not
bring enough light, nor enough heat.
It tasted like honey, hazelnut cream,
like the unbearable sweetness of a rose
you can feel on your tongue, it tasted
like grapes, a whole bowl full,
or it might have.

eben
leben…

What makes these musings verse is sound, rhyme, and rhythm. To read aloud!

This poem was published in the Münsterschwarzacher Bildkalender 2023, on the back of this beautiful image. (Photograph: Peacock butterfly. kie-ker via Pixabay.)

It was inspired by a poem by Josef Haselberger. We have written and exchanged
poetry for a very long time. I have several friends who are poets, and so does he.
The Forest on Fire
The Forest on Fire
The forest on fire, filling the screen,
catches your eye, the living torches
of the towering pines, the sore soles
of the koalas, the bent skeletons
of the verandas. You notice at last
the whale on your doorstep,
led astray, stranded, gasping, or
the regal white bird, its wide wings
spread out on your beach, already
choked on your civilisation. Where
is the lark? Half your precious planet
is about to be razed. Face it.
When you rush out now to fight
the fire, the flood, and the festering waste,
do you not know it is too late
for you, yourself? The biting fumes
are invisibly running in the rivers
of your blood, the glittering garbage
is secretly heaped in the caves
of your bones, the drugs and counter-drugs
skip around in your brain. Doomed
you confess to be? You are due,
overdue. Half your precious life
has already been cancelled. It’s gone.

Farbe ist Leben / [Colour, Life, Silence]
Farbe ist Leben
Farbe ist Leben,
Stille ist Frieden:
So hab’ ich’s, scheint’s,
erlebt und erschrieben.
Leben ist Farbe,
Stille Musik…
Bunt und bescheiden
blüht mein Geschick.
Wort ist Begegnung,
Sprache Musik…
Zwischen den Zeilen
schimmert das Glück.

Inspired by the word cloud Colour, Life, Silence of the 25 English poems I have written over the past months (generated and designed thanks to the Simple Word Cloud Generator).
The word cloud created from this poem, in turn, brought up the corresponding German words, with a number of other words expressing the central term “poem”.
“Erschrieben” is a word I made up for bringing about something by writing, while the regular word “erleben” means experiencing and is passive… or perhaps not!

Brief Encounter (I)
Brief Encounter (I)
Tiny
and arched
was the bridge,
of gleaming green
wood, between leaves
of palm-trees, lush, polished,
larger than a new-born child.
Through the muddy water
underneath, something
slid by, slid through:
a blood-red
carp. I was
startled,
I was struck.
A fish like a flame.

Ich freue mich
Ich freue mich
Ich freue mich, daß ich geboren bin
zu Morgendämmerung und Abendrot;

Grün und gülden / Green and Golden
Grün und gülden
Auf der weiten Erdenscheibe
kauert meine kleine Bleibe
still in pfauenblauer Nacht;
und aus ungeheurer Ferne
steigen unzählbare Sterne
wie von Zauberhand entfacht.
Auf den unsichtbaren Gleisen
durch den Weltraum aber kreisen
zwei Gestirne um mein Dach:
Glück muß mir das güldne schreiben,
doch das grüne bringt mir Leiden,–
zwei verflochten tausendfach.

Green and Golden
On the vast orb of the earth
clings my cottage to the turf,
hushed in night of peacock-blue;
from unfathomably far
still emerges star on star,
magically lit anew.
See, on secret tracks in space
two celestial bodies trace
orbits round my own abode:
golden star and green must bring
happiness and suffering –
interwoven thousandfold.

For more musings on destiny, see the previous post, Zugefallen. There are sparkling stars in Zugefallen and flickering candles in the poem Zugewogen. Destiny is written in the stars, or rather, in the Heavens.

zugefallen
zugefallen
eine kristallkugel
schwebte überm wald
und berührte die wipfel
als ich dir zufiel
unsere namen
hingen in den sternen
überkreuz
es gibt keinen zufall
tausend bücher
hab ich an meiner wand
die schieb ich beiseite
wie einen vorhang
tausend gedichte
hab ich in meiner kiste
da steig ich hinüber
die brauchen wir nicht
denn ich schreibe dir
ein neues gedicht
eine neue sprache
ein neues schweigen
denn du schenkst mir
ein neues lächeln
ein neues leuchten
eine neue leichtigkeit

Playing with the words
“Zufall” (conincidence)
and “zugefallen” (destined).
Is love written in the stars?
See my poem Zugewogen
about longing for love,
happiness, and destiny,
or rather, providence.
Frühlingsanfangsvorfreude
Frühlingsanfangsvorfreude
Das Spiel des Lichtes und das Spiel der Winde
auf goldnem Haar und goldnem Mauermoos,
die Käferlandschaft rauher brauner Rinde
und große Schmetterlinge, schwerelos…
Hundertmal dieselbe Runde drehen,
wenn zuletzt die Lebenskraft verfällt,–
aber nie hat man sich sattgesehen,
nie am Erdkreis noch am Himmelszelt!
Blaue Gaukeleien: Himmelssplitter!
Feuerfarbne Falter: Funkenflug!
Vogelchor, Geläute und Gewitter,–
niemals trinken Aug und Ohr genug.

The title means “Looking forward at the beginning of spring” in one word: “spring-beginning-forward-joy”! A poem about old age, full of hope and zest. It was written on spring equinox, after a walk round the block with a very aged person. Poignantly, soon after, the person grew too weak for walks.
